What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an alternative to traditional metal braces which many of us dread even the idea of. The Invisalign system has been developed to be almost undetectable and is a welcome alternative to the brackets and wires we see with traditional braces.
Invisalign works to correct and straighten teeth by using sets of clear, removable aligners. Each set is worn for approximately 1-2 weeks before their realigning capacity is met, and you move to a new set.
Why Choose Invisalign?
Invisalign systems allow you to live as you did before embarking on your teeth alignment journey and removes many of the disadvantages of braces.
The benefits of using the Invisalign system are plentiful. They include:
- Increased confidence throughout the straightening process – practically undetectable
- Simplification of complex tooth realignment with SmartForce® attachments
- Ease of removal for increased oral hygiene throughout the treatment process
- Reduced number of dentist appointments (6–8-week intervals)
- The freedom to eat what and when you like without any worry
- Increased comfort with SmartTrack® technology
- Suitability to active lifestyles
Braces vs Invisalign
Invisalign and traditional braces are often pitted against one another when patients are deciding on the right solution for their teeth aligning needs. At Chelmsford Dental we see the greatest benefit Invisalign offers is the freedom to live, eat, and drink as you did before beginning your teeth straightening journey.
With braces, patients are often having to alter their lifestyle for the 12-18 months treatment period. Invisalign makes teeth corrections easy, virtually invisible, and practically pain-free. Allowing you to play the sports you did previously, eat any food you wish to, and overall maintain your lifestyle throughout the entire process.

The great thing about Invisalign is that it can treat most cases of teeth misalignment. When you book a free consultation with your dentist, they will be able to assess if Invisalign is the most effective option for you.
Typically, Invisalign treatments work in a similar time frame to braces, however, with any dental treatment, it varies on a patient-by-patient basis. Factors such as the severity of your teeth misalignment will affect the treatment time.
The cost of Invisalign will vary on a patient-by-patient basis. The factors that affect the cost of Invisalign include:
- The complexity of your teeth misalignment
- The length of your treatment time
A wide variety of teeth misalignment issues can be treated with the Invisalign system. From severe cases through to minor cases.
Gapped Teeth
A common occurrence in patients is a gap between teeth that can not only cause self-consciousness but also affects gum health.
Crossbite
A crossbite is characterised by a misalignment of the top and bottom jaw. If left untreated it can cause issues to the jawbone.
Overbite
An overbite affects people whose top teeth bite over the bottom teeth significantly. If left untreated it can lead to jaw pain and irritation.
Overcrowding
As the name suggests, overcrowding occurs when there is not enough room within your mouth for your teeth and can lead to increased plaque.
Open bite
An open bite makes chewing and closing your mouth difficult as a patients top and bottom jaw are unable to shut.

Invisalign Alternatives
– Things to consider
A common alternative to Invisalign is the use of at-home retainer solutions. Their popularity has increased due to the accessibility of the product and the removal of appointments or follow-ups.
Although at-home treatments may seem like an easier option, the main drawback comes from a lack of personalised face-to-face consultation and follow-ups. This can result in teeth moving into incorrect positions or an unsatisfactory result.
When looking into these alternatives it is important to note these solutions are more suited to treating minor teeth misalignments and may not be the best solution for you.
No face to face consulatation
At-home options commonly don’t offer physical locations, leaving users to make the impressions of their teeth themselves. Without the correct training, this process can be done incorrectly, resulting in an inaccurate impression that causes retainers to not fit properly.
No qualification gurantee
Because these alternatives lack a face-to-face component to their service, you cannot be sure who is designing your treatment plan. This can result in not only an unprofessional result but also can create issues if the retainers have worsened the position of your teeth.
Lack of customer support
The most important aspect of your teeth straightening process is not the end result, but the steps taken to get there. Without proper customer support, the effectiveness of your treatment can be impacted and emergency issues can’t be resolved.
